Jewish
Ghetto in venice, the oldest ghetto in the world, created in 1516 by the Ruling
Council of venice. There are 4 synagogues in venice of different sizes; 3 are
Ashkenazi, and one is Sephardic (Schola Spagnola). |
| The Schola
Spagnola synagogue has a Byzantine influence and a Venetian flavor. The intention
of the Venetian Republic wasn't to persecute Jews, but it segregated its Jews
to placate the Roman Catholic Church, which had already forced the expulsion of
Jews from much of Western Europe.
| A
fex minutes from the Ghetto there is the fascinating church of Madonna
dell'Orto whith its famous legend and works by Tintoretto. It is also
possible to visit the Tintoretto's delightful home |
|
Going back to Canal
Grande you would find the Ca D'Oro, a magnificent International Gothic
structure house, the Galleria Franchetti, an impressive collection of bronzes,
tapestries and paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries.
|
An important
raison for visiting is the chance to see the view from the balconies over the
Grand Canal on the 1st and 2nd floors. This wonderfull 15th-centurypalace was
named for the gilding that originally decorated the facade's sculptural details.
| The 1st
floor of the museum is devoted mainly to religious painting, sculpture and bronzes
from the 15th and early 16th centuries. One of the first items you see is a polyptych
recounting the martyrdom of St Bartholomew.Much of what you see on this floor
is Venetian, but one room has been set aside principally for Tuscan art.On the
2nd floor you can see a series of fragments of frescoes. All are by Titian except
one - an exceptional nude by Giorgione. Also on this floor is a mixed collection,
including works by Tintoretto, Titian, Carpaccio, Mantegna, Vivarini, Signorelli
and van Eyck.
| Five
minutes from Ca d'Oro there is a palace whose magnificently decorated interior
provides a unique setting for the gaming tables of the
Casinò di Venezia, which took over the building in 1959. |
|
Customers come to chance
their luck at the traditional French games of roulette, trente-et-quarante and
chemin de fer, or to play the slot machines, which account for 60 per cent of
the casino’s revenue. one of the palace’s most notable claims to fame is that
Richard Wagner stayed and, in 1883, died there. The reconstruction of the composer’s
apartment, in collaboration with the Wagner Association of venice, is an important
part of the casino’s strategy to turn the palace into a cultural centre as well
as a prestigious gaming house. Accrossing the bridge on the Canal Grande
(just one minute from our bed breakfasts) you arrive in a few steps to the Church
of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. The Lesser Friars of the Franciscan Order were
given a plot of land in 1250 and completed the first church on that site in 1338.
| Two
years later they began construction of the present, far larger building, completing
it over the next 100 years in 1446. The high altar was subsequently dedicated
in 1469. This monumental building--one of venice's three great Gothic churches--contains
some of the greatest art treasures in venice.
O the otherside of
Campo dei Frari there is the Scuola
Grande di San Rocco This was another very wealthy and artistically competitive
confraternity. The orignal headquarters less than half a mile away were considerably
less elegant and imposing; this building, built over most of the sixteenth century
under a varied succession of architects, is decorated upstairs and down by Tintoretto.
| The
scuola is separated from its adjacent church by a well-traveled calle. Scuole
were religious confraternities. They existed for the purposes of religious self-improvement,
charitable deeds, and general fellowship. Scuole grandi were large all-male confraternities
whose memberships were drawn from the upper and middle classes across the entire
city. There were six of these
